Múte B Egede views the upcoming visit by top US officials to Greenland as “an act of aggression,” especially in light of Donald Trump’s threats to take possession of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
Greenland’s prime minister has strongly criticized a planned visit by high-ranking US officials to the island, calling it “highly aggressive” considering Trump’s threats to control the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
Múte Egede, whose party did not secure the most seats in the recent elections but will remain in power until a coalition government is formed, made these comments to the Sermitsiaq newspaper.
The White House confirmed that Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President JD Vance, will travel to Greenland with one of their children to witness a national dogsled race.
The Trump administration stated that the visit is meant to “celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity.”
Additionally, Mike Waltz, the US national security adviser, is expected to visit a US military base in northern Greenland.
In response to these plans, Egede stated that they “can in no way be seen as a harmless visit.”
“What is the purpose of the national security adviser in Greenland? It’s to demonstrate power, and the message is not to be misunderstood,” he stated.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who is likely to become the next leader and is currently in coalition talks, also condemned the actions of the Trump administration.
“The fact that the Americans are aware of our negotiations shows a lack of respect for the Greenlandic people,” he remarked.
This year, relations between Greenland and the US have deteriorated, as US President Donald Trump has pledged to gain control of the island “one way or another,” citing national security of the US as the rationale.
“I think we will have it,” Trump said of Greenland shortly after his second presidential term began.
On Sunday, JD Vance attacked Denmark, accusing it of “not being a good ally” to the US.
These upcoming visits are not the first by individuals linked to Trump.
His son, Donald Trump Jr, visited Greenland in January, then claiming that the territory would “greatly benefit” by becoming American.
Recent polls indicate that 85% of Greenlanders oppose Trump’s plans.
