The foundation of the abbey at Pannonhalma took place in 996, just four years prior to the founding of the Hungarian Kingdom. Nestled atop a tall hill in northwestern Hungary, the abbey is home to the nation’s oldest collection of books, as well as some of its most significant and earliest written records.
