Israel has announced its intention to stop providing electricity to Gaza, following their decision last week to halt all goods supplies to the region. The consequences of this decision are yet to be fully understood, but it will undoubtedly have an impact on desalination plants in the area that rely on electricity for producing drinking water.
In addition to cutting off essential supplies, Israel also seeks to pressure Hamas to agree to an extension of the first phase of the ceasefire. For their part, Hamas wants to begin negotiations on the second stage of the ceasefire, which includes the release of remaining hostages, Israeli troop withdrawal, and permanent peace agreements.
The decision by Israel to sever supplies to Gaza has come under intense criticism, with the UN human rights office warning that denying necessary supplies could amount to collective punishment.
Israel’s latest move is part of its ongoing conflict with Hamas, which was sparked by a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel. While a ceasefire has allowed for some progress in the resolution of the conflict, including the release of hostages and prisoners, cuts to essential supplies are causing concern with regards to humanitarian conditions in the region.
With tensions remaining high during the religious observance of Ramadan, Palestinians are bracing for further increases in the prices of essential goods.
