Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, met with the families of soldiers who were killed while participating in overseas military operations and assured them that he would guarantee them a prosperous life, as reported by the state-operated media accompanied by photographs on Saturday.
The event came after last week’s memorial service held in Pyongyang, the capital, which honoured soldiers who returned from battle in Ukraine. During this time, Kim was seen weeping and bestowing posthumous state medals onto the soldiers’ remains.
According to the Korean Central News Agency’s (KCNA) report on Saturday, Kim expressed his profound sympathies to the families of officers who died in foreign combat zones.
Kim was quoted as saying that the news of the loss of their beloved children and husbands must have been a sudden and shocking blow, especially since they were unaware whether they were alive or dead.
Our Party and government will bring all the glory to the heroes revered by the whole nation and to their excellent parents who raised them to be admirable men. They will also do their best to provide you, ahead of others, with a beautiful life in the country defended at the cost of the lives of the martyrs, Kim added.
KCNA reported that Kim presented the families with photos of the martyrs during a ceremony held on Friday at the Mokran House, a prestigious meeting venue in Pyongyang.
In April, Pyongyang officially acknowledged that its military personnel were sent to support Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, revealing that some of its soldiers were killed in action, without disclosing the exact number.
