Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his willingness to spare the lives of Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk region, in response to an appeal from US President Donald Trump regarding soldiers detained by Russian forces.
Putin emphasized that for Trump’s call to be effective, Ukrainian soldiers must fully surrender and withdraw from the Kursk region.
“For the effective implementation of the US President’s call, a corresponding order from the military-political leadership of Ukraine to its military units to lay down their arms and surrender is necessary.”
Putin emphasized that the surrendered soldiers “will be guaranteed life and decent treatment” in accordance with international law and Russian law.
Putin also accused Ukrainian soldiers of committing numerous crimes against civilians in the invaded territories.
“We draw attention to the fact that Ukrainian militants have committed numerous crimes against the civilian population in the invasion zone. These acts, as I have already said, are classified as terrorism by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation,” Putin added.
The Russian army, supported by North Korean troops, is on the verge of fully driving Ukrainian forces out of their stronghold in Russia’s western Kursk region, which would be a significant setback for Kyiv.
Meanwhile, Putin met with US envoy Steve Witcoff to discuss the details of the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, instructing him to convey Moscow’s position to Trump.
