New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Conservative opponent launched their election campaigns on Sunday against the backdrop of a trade war and annexation threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. Carney announced a five-week election campaign before the vote on April 28.

The governing Liberals, who appeared to be on track to suffer a historic election defeat, have seen a boost in support due to Trump’s trade war and annexation threats. Trump has repeatedly suggested that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state and acknowledged on Friday that his actions have disrupted Canadian politics.

Trump’s constant attacks on Canada’s sovereignty have angered Canadians and created a surge in Canadian nationalism, which has improved the Liberal Party’s poll numbers. Carney has stated that the government needs a clear mandate, particularly during a time of crisis.

The election campaign, spanning 37 days, will determine the leadership of the House of Commons. The party that secures a majority either alone or with the support of another party will form the next government.

Mark Carney replaced Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January and remained in power until the Liberal Party chose a new leader on March 9. The opposition Conservatives had expected to focus the election on Trudeau’s declining popularity.

However, due to the recent bilateral tensions, the election is now expected to focus on which party can best handle the challenges posed by Trump. The U.S. has imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and is threatening to extend tariffs to all Canadian products. Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader, is Carney’s main challenger but has since faced setbacks due to Trump’s actions.

Poilievre vows to stand up to Trump and insists on recognizing Canada’s independence and sovereignty. Carney, who previously served as the head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England during significant economic events, has yet to receive a phone call from Trump.

Poilievre, a career politician known for his populist stance, advocates for prioritizing Canada and plans to defund the public broadcaster. He also prohibits media from being on his campaign buses and planes.
