A gathering of protesters in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava took place on Friday, voicing their opposition to a recent visit by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to Russia. Fico was the only leader from an European Union country to attend the 80th-anniversary celebrations in Moscow, marking the Allies’ victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Demonstrators at the Freedom Square chanted slogans such as “We’ve had enough of Fico,” “Slovakia is Europe,” and “Stay there,” indicating their disapproval of Fico’s stance on Russia. The protesters emphasized that Fico does not represent the entirety of Slovakia.
Furthermore, the Kremlin has been using the annual “Victory Day” celebrations to showcase its military strength and heed the courage of its forces fighting in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin praised their determination and resilience.
In a video message, Fico stated his goal of establishing a “normal, friendly cooperation” relationship with Russia. The protests in Bratislava and other Slovak towns are part of a series ignited by Fico’s recent voyage to Moscow for discussions with Russian President Putin regarding gas deliveries in December. Fico regained power in 2023 with his leftist Smer party’s victory in an election that promoted pro-Russian and anti-American sentiments, making him a controversial figure both domestically and internationally.
Known for his pro-Russian standpoint, Fico has expressed opposition to the EU’s policies concerning the ongoing war in Ukraine. His administration has faced considerable protests due to its pro-Kremlin stance and increasingly euro-sceptic approach. On various occasions, Fico has threatened to withdraw Slovakia from NATO.
