Following over a century of construction, Barcelona’s famed Sagrada Familia basilica is approaching the completion of its central tower, set to become the tallest Christian church in Europe.
The basilica’s general director, Xavier Martínez, stated that the architect Antoni Gaudí’s Tower of Jesus Christ, the central piece of this ambitious project, is slated for completion by the end of this year or early into the next. With a planned height of 172 meters, it will exceed the 162 meters of the steeple at Ulm Minster in southern Germany, making it the highest.
The initial components are already in position, and the tower construction will proceed in phases over the coming months. It will culminating with the installation of a cross at the top, surrounded by five other towers: one dedicated to the Virgin Mary and four smaller towers honoring the
