In November 2021, two sister polar bears were born at Rostock Zoo in Germany. Until now, they had lived alongside their mother named Sizzel. Typically in the wilderness, polar bears leave their mothers around the age of two to three years. The transfer of these bears to Estonia was carefully planned. Both bears were transported in crates that allowed them to see each other at all times throughout the journey.
Skadi and Kaja currently reside in the Tallinn Zoo’s enclosure that previously housed Friida, a long-term resident for 23 years. Friida has been moved to Scandinavian Wildlife Park in Denmark. The new arrivals have increased the zoo’s population of young female polar bears to four, joining Inuk and Imaq who also arrived last November.
This move is part of the European Endangered Species Program (EEP), which is dedicated to coordinating conservation efforts among European zoos to protect endangered species, including polar bears.
