A large crowd convened in Iraq’s Kurdish region on Thursday to rejoice in Nowruz, the festival marking the beginning of spring and the start of the new year.

Having its roots in Persian and Iranian customs, Nowruz has transcended boundaries and is now celebrated by numerous diverse communities around the world.

In Akre, renowned as the “capital of Nowruz,” both men and women adorned with torches ascended the mountains while fireworks illuminated the sky.

Occurring on 21 March, Nowruz represents the transition from darkness to light. For the Kurds, it possesses profound political significance, mirroring their cultural identity and ongoing pursuit of autonomy.

With over 20 million Kurds residing in Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Turkey, the festival remains a powerful symbol of unity.
