A Bob Vylan concert scheduled for tomorrow in the Netherlands has been called off after frontman Bobby Vylan was accused of celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, a well-known right-wing activist and supporter of Donald Trump, was shot dead at a Utah Valley University event last Wednesday.
The British punk-rap duo performed in Amsterdam’s Paradiso Grote Zaal, where they dedicated the song ‘CSGB’ to the late Kirk. The frontman expressed: “I want to dedicate this next song to an absolute piece of shit of a human being. The pronouns were/were. ‘Cos if you chat shit, you will get banged. Rest in piss, Charlie Kirk, you piece of shit.
Now the band’s scheduled gig at 013 in Tilburg has been scrapped, with the venue citing the statements from Paradiso as crossing a line stating, “While these statements are part of punk and activism, and the reporting can sometimes lack nuance, we believe these comments go too far and fall outside the scope of what we offer as a platform.”
Bobby Vylan posted a video denying they celebrated Kirk’s death saying, “At no point during yesterday’s show, was Charlie Kirk’s death celebrated. At no point. Did we celebrate Charlie Kirk’s death? I did call him a piece of shit, that much is true, but at no point was his death celebrated.”
The video has received thousands of comments, including from former New York mayor and Trump ally Rudy Giuliani who branded the band as “irresponsible and dangerous”.
The band faced controversy earlier this year for their Glastonbury set where they criticized the UK government’s involvement in the deaths of Palestinians and urged the dismantling of a violent military machine, not advocating for the death of any group.
Charlie Kirk was 31 when he died last week. Tyler Robinson from Utah has since been arrested for the assassination.
While many mourn the loss of Kirk and condemn the violence, his death has increased division within the United States, highlighting the sharply differing opinions on his political stances.
