The 88-year-old Pope Francis has been in the hospital since February 14 due to pneumonia and breathing issues. According to the Vatican’s morning medical bulletin, the Pope “rested well” overnight and woke up just after 8 am. However, no further information was provided regarding his condition, which has been a concern during his extended stay. On Monday, Francis experienced two instances of respiratory failure and required the use of an oxygen mask and non-invasive ventilator. This is the second time mechanical intervention was necessary, as Francis had previously used a ventilator for two days during a separate breathing crisis. As of Tuesday evening, the Vatican stated that Francis had resumed high-flow oxygen therapy and alternated between prayer and rest. The Pope’s illness has resulted in him being unable to participate in the traditional Angelus prayer in person for the last three Sundays and missing the beginning of Lent. This is the longest hospital stay during his 12-year papacy. Pope Francis has a history of lung-related problems, having had part of one lung removed in his youth. The Holy See has consistently stated that the Pope’s condition is “guarded,” indicating doctors’ caution and that he is not completely out of danger.
