A hiker was discovered deceased on Friday after being attacked and dragged into thick undergrowth by a brown bear, according to The Asahi Shimbun. The victim, presumed to be in his 20s, was trekking along a Mount Rausu trail in Hokkaido, Japan, on Thursday when the incident occurred. His companion witnessed the man being mauled by the bear and fled to seek police assistance.
After the attack, the trail where the incident happened and two other paths leading to Mount Rausu were shut down. Hikers on the mountain took shelter at the Okhotsk observatory. On Friday, investigators found bloodied articles of the missing man’s clothing, and blood traces in the vicinity, confirming the tragic event.
The frequency of bear sightings at Mount Rausu, a known habitat for brown bears, had risen prior to this attack. Recent attacks have prompted local authorities to conduct bear safety drills. Fox News Digital’s request for a response on the incident from Hokkaido Prefectural Police remains unanswered.
