Afghanistan’s Taliban chief claims no necessity for adopting Western legal systems.

The Taliban’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akundzada, stated during an Eid al-Fitr sermon at the Eidgah Mosque in Kandahar, Afghanistan, that Western laws are not needed in the country. Emphasizing the importance of Islamic law (sharia), he noted that democracy cannot coexist with sharia. Akundzada’s remarks come as the Taliban continues to enforce strict laws on Afghan women and girls, restricting their access to education and public spaces. While the group remains isolated internationally, they have established ties with nations like China and the United Arab Emirates. Despite some Taliban members advocating for a softer approach to gain international support, Afghan President Joe Biden has been in recent talks with the group, primarily over prisoner exchanges.
