American Embassy in Thailand Issues Warning to US Citizens Following Expulsion of Uyghurs to China

The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok is cautioning Americans about potential “violent retaliatory attacks” this Friday, following Thailand’s deportation of 45 Uyghurs to China. Secretary of State Marco Rubio strongly denounced the move. Thai authorities asserted that China guaranteed the men, who had been in custody for over a decade, would not face any penalties. The Embassy advised Americans in Thailand to increase their vigilance, especially in crowded tourist spots, due to the potential risk of collateral damage. This warning is based on previous deportations of Uyghurs from Thailand that led to violent incidents, including the 2015 bombing of the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, which resulted in 20 deaths and 125 injuries. Rubio criticized the deportations, stating concerns about the Uyghurs’ lack of due process rights and exposure to persecution, forced labor, and torture in China. He called on protective governments to refrain from returning Uyghurs to China and urged Chinese authorities to ensure the well-being of the returned Uyghurs.
