Liran Berman describes his brothers, Gali and Ziv, as “the light of every room they walk into,” highlighting how the two brothers, professional lighting technicians, brought brightness to their surroundings. Tragically, Gali and Ziv, twins from Kibbutz Kfar Aza, were abducted during Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks and have been held hostage in Gaza since then.
Despite many in their age group relocating to urban areas like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Gali and Ziv chose to stay in southern Israel with their family. This decision was influenced by their desire to assist their mother in caring for their father, who suffers from dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
Liran recounted that his brothers were taken from their beds on a Saturday late at night during a holiday, a sudden and terrifying event for the family. The family later confirmed through testimonies from released hostages that Gali and Ziv were initially taken together but were separated shortly after arrival in Gaza.
Liran stresses the deep impact of this separation, noting that Gali and Ziv—who have harmed no one—are victims of the ongoing conflict. The family had to cling to the belief that their sons were alive, which was later confirmed by testimony from freed hostages. This confirmation provided a much-needed validation after a long, uncertain period.
Liran appeals to President Donald Trump for assistance, believing that his administration could facilitate the release of the remaining hostages. He expresses a strong belief in what he refers to as “the Trump effect,” showing hope for a resolution to their situation.
Additionally, Liran expresses concern over the anti-Israel sentiments on U.S. college campuses, urging students to recognize the commonality in age and experiences they share with Gali and Ziv. He emphasizes that the brothers have full lives ahead of them and are dearly missed by their family and supporters.
