More than 3,000 people have died due to the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Burma last week, which destroyed thousands of buildings and exacerbated the country’s humanitarian crisis. Burma’s military-led government has reported that the death toll from the earthquake has risen to 3,085, with 4,715 people injured and another 341 missing.
The United Nations has stated that due to compromised infrastructure and a surge in patients, access to healthcare has become nearly impossible in many affected areas. Thousands of people are in urgent need of trauma care, surgical interventions, and treatment for disease outbreaks.
The World Health Organization has assessed that four hospitals and one health center have been completely destroyed, while another 32 hospitals and 18 health centers have been partially damaged. The agency is preparing $1 million worth of relief supplies, including body bags, and is warning of a rising risk of diseases such as cholera spreading in affected areas.
Efforts to provide shelter have been underway, with workers laboring in the 104-degree heat to set up big tents in open fields in Naypyitaw, Burma’s capital. More than 1,550 international rescuers have been operating alongside locals, and rescue supplies and equipment have been sent by 17 countries.
The quake has worsened the already dire humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, where there are 3 million displaced people and nearly 20 million in need. In Bangkok, Thailand, where the quay brought down a skyscraper under construction, the search for survivors and bodies continues.
