Police are investigating a boat that washed ashore on an Eastern Caribbean island, where they found the remains of at least 11 individuals in an advanced state of decomposition. The Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force received a report about a suspicious vessel nearing the coastline of the island of Canouan on Monday morning.
The boat, measuring 45 feet long, 12 feet wide, and 6 feet deep, was grounded on the shore. Passports apparently from the Republic of Mali were found on the boat, and police are working with regional and international partners to ascertain the identities of the deceased and the boat’s origin. The remains have been moved to the Kingstown mortuary on St. Vincent for further examination.
The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory for Mali due to crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. The advisory warns that terrorist groups continue to pose a threat of attacks on places frequented by foreigners.
