Taiwan’s military responded on Wednesday to China’s launch of live-fire exercises just 40 nautical miles off its coast. The drills, taking place near the port city of Kaohsiung, were only brought to Taiwan’s attention when local vessels were warned to avoid the area. The defense ministry accused China of violating international norms, claiming that such actions not only endanger navigation safety but also destabilize the region. Additionally, Taiwan detected 32 Chinese military aircraft participating in the exercises. This exercise comes a week after the fourth-ranked leader of the Chinese Communist Party, Wang Huning, urged for increased efforts towards reunification with Taiwan, with Beijing asserting its claim over the island. Meanwhile, on Feb. 25, Taiwan’s coast guard detained the Chinese crew of a vessel suspected of severing an undersea cable connecting Taiwan and Penghu. All eight crew members were Chinese nationals.
