China’s military conducted large-scale drills around Taiwan, describing them as a “severe warning” and a message of “forceful containment against Taiwan independence,” according to Beijing officials. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense tracked 19 Chinese navy vessels and monitored the movement of China’s Shandong aircraft carrier and its carrier group entering Taiwan’s air defense identification zone. Taiwan responded by dispatching military aircraft, ships, and activating land-based missile systems. The exercises involved Chinese navy, air, ground, and rocket forces and were unannounced. Taiwan strongly condemned China’s actions, which it sees as threatening regional peace and stability. The drills were aimed at testing integrated operations, seizure of operational control, and multi-directional precision strikes. China’s Taiwan Affairs Office also stated that the exercises targeted Taiwan’s pro-independence president, Lai Ching-te, and warned against promoting “Taiwan independence.”
