China pledges to retaliate against the US in response to tariffs imposed by Trump

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a news conference on the sidelines of China’s annual parliamentary session, accused the United States of acting deceitfully by imposing new tariffs on China, and threatened retaliation. The criticism comes after the U.S. imposed tariffs on China, along with Canada and Mexico, over allegations of fentanyl smuggling, a claim that China disputes.

Wang argued that these accusations served as a flimsy excuse for raising tariffs and warned that intimidation tactics would not deter China from responding firmly. Furthermore, he dismissed the idea that the U.S. could both suppress China and maintain a good relationship, arguing that such duplicity undermines the stability of bilateral relations and diminishes mutual trust.

The tariffs are part of an ongoing trade dispute between Washington and Beijing, initiated when President Donald Trump re-entered office. In response, Beijing has raised tariffs on American imports including agricultural products and expanded restrictions on business dealings with key U.S. companies.

During the press conference, Wang also addressed the broader implications of prioritizing one’s national interests over international cooperation, likening such a policy to the law of the jungle, where smaller and weaker countries would suffer the most, leading to a significant disruption of the international order and the exploitation of the weak by the strong.
