Greenland’s Prime Minister Assures Island Won’t Be Acquired by the United States

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has firmly stated that the United States will not acquire control over Greenland. Nielsen was responding to President Donald Trump’s expressed interest in annexing the self-governing territory, which is a part of Denmark and a NATO ally, citing national security concerns. The prime minister’s Facebook post explicitly declared, “The United States will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future.”

The U.S. interest in Greenland has recently been signaled by a high-profile visit to Pituffik Space Base, the Department of Defense’s northernmost military installation on the island, by Vice President JD Vance, second lady Usha Vance, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee. In a recent interview with NBC, Trump hinted that military force could be used but expressed hope that acquiring Greenland could be achieved without it, framing the potential acquisition as a matter of world peace and international security.

Greenland is seeking independence from Denmark but not to become a U.S. territory, and this proposal has sparked opposition among Greenlanders, with polls indicating that almost all are against it. Demonstrations against the idea, featuring slogans like “Make America Go Away” and “Yankees Go Home,” have been notable, marking some of the largest protests the island has seen. The issue is also framed in the context of increasing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic.
