Hamas demands a halt to fighting as a condition for releasing a U.S. Israeli hostage

Hamas has stated that it will only release Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander if Israel implements the existing ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Alexander, who is 21, is the last living American hostage in captivity in the Gaza Strip and has been held captive for 526 days. A senior Hamas official has also stated that talks over the ceasefire’s second phase will need to begin on the day of the release and last no longer than 50 days. In addition, Hamas is demanding the release of more Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages. Alexander was serving in the Israel Defense Forces when Hamas’ attacks on Israel began on October 7.
