Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has announced that the Trump administration plans to enhance military ties with the Philippines to strengthen deterrence against Chinese aggression in the disputed South China Sea. This announcement came during a meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the Philippines, which was part of Hegseth’s trip to Asia to reaffirm Washington’s “ironclad” commitment to the region under the Trump administration. Hegseth emphasized that deterrence is crucial in this region, particularly considering the threats from the Communist Chinese. He stated that friends need to stand united to deter conflicts and ensure free navigation in the South China Sea and the West Philippine Sea. Hegseth also praised the Philippines for its firm stance in defending its interests in the contested waters. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, and there have been increasing confrontations between Chinese and Philippine coast guard and naval forces in recent years. Hegseth reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to the Mutual Defense Treaty and the partnership. Marcos appreciated Hegseth’s visit to the Philippines first in Asia, stating that it sends a strong message of both countries’ commitment to maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific region. The defense secretary’s visit comes a month before the treaty allies hold their largest annual combat exercises, which will include live-fire drills. Hesgeth is currently facing calls for his resignation for texting attack plans to a Signal group that included top-level U.S. security officials and the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic magazine.
