A penguin that was transported in a cardboard box was responsible for a helicopter crash in South Africa earlier this year, according to authorities. On January 19, a pilot and three passengers were conducting an aerial survey when they agreed to transport a penguin from Bird Island back to South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. The penguin was placed in a cardboard box but not properly secured. During the flight, the box slid and interfered with the helicopter’s controls, causing it to crash around 50 feet off the ground. The helicopter sustained substantial damage, but no one, including the penguin, was injured. The South African Civil Aviation Authority’s investigation report concluded that the lack of proper containment for the penguin created a dangerous situation and emphasized the importance of securing cargo to avoid interfering with flight controls and passenger safety.
