Israel targets Beirut for the first time following the cessation of hostilities in the most recent conflict with Hezbollah, marking a shift in the ongoing tensions between the two parties.

On Friday, Israel conducted its first attack on Lebanon’s capital since the conclusion of the Israel-Hezbollah war in November. This attack targeted a Hezbollah drone storage facility in Dahiyeh, a residential and commercial neighborhood in southern Beirut, marking the first Israeli strike in Beirut since the ceasefire, despite ongoing daily strikes in southern Lebanon. Israel justified the attack as retaliation for alleged rocket fire from Lebanon into northern Israel, warning that further strikes would continue unless Lebanon’s government takes action to stop such incidents. The area hit is close to at least two schools, and Lebanon’s government subsequently closed all schools and universities in Beirut’s southern suburb of Hadath for the day, with residents fleeing the area. Hezbollah denies firing the rockets and accuses Israel of fabricating reasons to continue attacks. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the strikes as “unacceptable” and vowed to address the issue with Israeli and U.S. leaders, calling on the U.S. to pressure Israel. The U.S. State Department also urged Lebanon’s government to disarm terrorist groups to prevent further violence. Israeli strikes elsewhere in Lebanon on the same day killed three people and wounded 18, including children and women, in the village of Kfar Tibnit. These attacks come after a ceasefire with Hamas ended, with Israel also halting aid deliveries to Gaza, where it seeks the return of captives held by Hamas in exchange for concessions.
