Israeli representative specializing in countering Jew-hatred cautions against pervasive deadly animosity

As the conflict between Israel and Hamas intensifies, a significant rise in antisemitism has been observed worldwide. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported a record-high of over 10,000 antisemitic incidents in the United States between October 7, 2023, and October 6, 2024, marking the highest number of incidents recorded since 1979. The aftermath of the deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust saw protests erupting on university campuses and in major cities, with a crowd gathering in Times Square just a day after the attacks to support the attackers and condemn the victims. Israeli special envoy for combating antisemitism, Michal Cotler-Wunsch, highlighted the global surge of antisemitism and warned of a new strain of anti-Zionism, likening it to a lethal virus. The protests at elite universities revealed deep-seated prejudices with some professors praising or downplaying the attacks. Cotler-Wunsch emphasized the need for consistent application of policies against these violations and for institutions to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism as a fundamental measure to combat hatred and preserve freedom and humanity.
