North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has supervised the testing of newly developed AI-powered suicide drones and has called for increased production, as reported by North Korean state media on Thursday. Photographs released by the Communist nation depict Kim inspecting upgraded reconnaissance drones capable of detecting military targets and enemy activities both on land and at sea, according to the KCNA state news agency.

Kim emphasized the importance of unmanned control and AI capabilities as top priorities in the modernization of the armed forces. Images show Kim inspecting what appears to be an unmanned surveillance aircraft resembling the U.S. RQ-4 Global Hawk. Other images depict a fixed-wing drone targeting a tank-like object before exploding, demonstrating the drones’ potential to enhance North Korea’s intelligence and combat capabilities.

The new exploding drones are designed for various attack missions and are equipped with unspecified AI capabilities. The tests highlight North Korea’s expanding military capabilities, particularly in the development of drones, which Kim has emphasized in recent months. Just weeks prior, North Korea unveiled its first nuclear-powered submarine, signaling a major potential security threat to South Korea and the U.S.

Additionally, North Korea has been providing military support to Russia by sending weapons and ammunition, raising concerns about potential tech transfers in return. This support has included about 11,000 military personnel fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine, marking North Korea’s first significant involvement in a large-scale conflict since the 1950-53 Korean War.
