A member of the French Parliament is pushing for the return of the Statue of Liberty from the United States to its home country of France. Raphaël Glucksmann, a center-left politician, made impassioned remarks during a convention of his political party, Place Publique. He accused the United States, specifically under the administration that embraced ‘tyrants’ and sacked scientists for advocating for academic liberty, of dishonoring the gift given to them. Glucksmann stated that since the US seems to devalue the significance of the Statue of Liberty, it should return to its country of origin to hold more meaning there.
The presenter of the Statue of Liberty was France, during the late 1800s, and it became an emblematic presence in New York Harbor as a symbol of freedom. The Statue of Liberty, designed by the French sculptor, Auguste Bartholdi, stands as a monument in several places including the shores of New York and an alloy on a small island on the Seine River in Paris.
Glucksmann is a strong proponent of Ukraine’s fight against Russia and is critical of former US President Donald Trump’s policies, notably those affecting funding to universities and research institutions. His advocacy reflects a broader political stance different from those whom he regards as accomplices to authoritarianism.
