Pope Francis’ funeral will take place on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. local Rome time (4:00 a.m. ET) at the parvis of St. Peter’s Basilica, with more than 200,000 people expected to attend. The funeral Mass, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, will include an Entrance Antiphon, followed by the congregation acknowledging their sins, and a series of readings and prayers. Mass will conclude with a Canticle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The Novendiali, a nine-day period of prayer and mourning, will begin on the day of the funeral. Masses will be held daily starting Sunday, April 27, through to Sunday, May 4, each for different groups including Vatican employees, the congregation of Rome, Eastern Churches, members of the Roman Curia, and the Papal Chapel.
