South Korean fighter jets mistakenly dropped bombs on a civilian area during a joint live-fire training exercise with the United States, causing injuries to multiple individuals and damage to several buildings, including homes and a Catholic church. The MK-82 bombs, which “abnormally” detached from the KF-16 fighter jet, landed outside of the designated firing range and caused unspecified harm to civilians. South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported that at least 15 people, including civilians and soldiers, were injured, with two sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries. At least seven buildings were damaged in the incident. The air force has apologized for the incident, pledging to establish an investigation committee to determine the cause of the accident and the extent of the damage. South Korean media reported that the accident occurred in Pocheon, a city located near the heavily fortified border with North Korea. Pocheon Mayor Paek Young-hyun called the bombings “awful” and demanded that military drills in the city be halted until safe protocols can be established to prevent such recurrences. The military announced the suspension of all live-fire drills nationwide until the exact cause of the incident can be determined and steps to avoid future incidents can be implemented. The Pocheon department stated that while buildings including homes, a Catholic church, and a greenhouse were damaged, they did not appear to have been directly hit by the bombs.
