European leaders are expressing fatigue with President Donald Trump’s efforts to broker a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, according to the European Union’s chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas. She stated, “Russian President Vladimir Putin ‘doesn’t really want peace.’” Despite a statement from Trump indicating the existence of positive talks with Russia, he did not indicate whether any substantial progress had been made regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The NATO allies and traditional U.S. partners are growing frustrated with what they perceive as Trump’s embracement of Moscow at the expense of ties with Ukraine. Kallas suggested that economic and political pressure needs to be put on Russia to facilitate negotiations for ending the conflict.
Trump’s administration is slated to finalize a minerals agreement with Ukraine this Friday, which could lead to discussions about a ceasefire. Although Trump has been vocal about urging NATO nations to share more of the financial burden in securing Ukraine, a reversal in U.S. policy has disappointed some European countries, such as Germany, which is contemplating a more assertive stance towards the U.S.
Kallas emphasized the importance of maintaining the NATO alliance and highlighted that Article 5 was invoked only once in the alliance’s history after the 9/11 attacks. She also pointed out the sacrifices that NATO countries have made in support of U.S. endeavors. Ultimately, Kallas argued that it is vital for the U.S. to remain a staunch partner with Europe in curbing Russian aggression, as well as addressing threats from other potential adversaries such as China. The diplomat visited Washington to discuss these issues with U.S. officials, affirming her confidence in maintaining open lines of communication despite the cancellation of a planned meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
