A tourist visiting Mexico faces charges after attempting to climb the stairs of the Temple of Kukulcan in Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Bystander footage captures the moment the individual, yet to be named by authorities, scales the side of the iconic pyramid during the spring equinox, which drew approximately 9,000 tourists to the location. According to Mexico News Daily, the tourist, a 38-year-old German, was arrested after attempting to hide inside the pyramid chamber and was escorted out by Mexican National Guard officers and personnel from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The incident happened as tourists flocked to witness the natural phenomenon where sunlight casts a serpent-shaped shadow along the pyramid’s stairs. Climbing the nearly 1,000-year-old structure has been banned since 2006 to preserve the monument. The arrested individuals face fines under Article 55 of the Federal Law on Archaeological, Artistic, and Historical Monuments and Zones of Mexico. In a similar incident two years prior, a Polish tourist also attempted to climb the same pyramid, was apprehended, fined, and jailed for 12 hours. The Chichén Itzá authorities have not commented on the recent incident.
