As new tariffs came into effect on Tuesday, analysts suggest that if Canada’s Liberal Party retains power, they may owe a portion of this political gain to President Donald Trump. Since Trump’s inauguration, Canada’s official opposition Conservative Party, which once led the governing Liberals by a wide margin, has seen a decline in popularity. An Ipsos poll found that, for the first time since the 2021 federal election, the Liberals have overtaken the Conservatives by two points, with 38% popularity compared to the Conservative’s 36%. Six weeks earlier, the Conservatives were leading the Liberals by 26 points. A general election is expected to be called as early as this spring by Trudeau’s successor, who will be announced on Sunday. Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos Global Public Affairs, attributes the rapid and dramatic decline of the Conservatives to two factors: Justin Trudeau’s impending departure as head of the Canadian government and Liberal Party, and Trump’s threatening rhetoric and tariffs against Canada, which may shift the political dynamics in Canada.
