King Charles III, recognized as Canada’s sovereign, gave a speech to the Canadian Parliament on Tuesday, seeming to reject the idea of Canada becoming a U.S. state. He emphasized the importance of Canadian values and the ability of Canadians to determine their own future.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently won an election in part due to opposition to Trump’s annexation idea, told Trump that Canada “won’t be for sale, ever.” King Charles III also spoke against the idea, stating that Canadians could give themselves more than any foreign power could ever take away.
Trump recently announced the architecture for the “Golden Dome” missile defense system, which would create a network of satellites to detect, track, and potentially intercept incoming ballistic missiles. The project is expected to cost $175 billion and be fully operational within three years. Canada has expressed interest in being included in the safety net, but officials have emphasized the need for active discussions and negotiations on security and economic programs between the U.S. and Canada.
