US begins deporting migrants to Maduro’s Venezuela

Venezuela will resume accepting deportation flights from the US after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro suspended them earlier this month. Jorge Rodríguez, the president of Venezuela’s Assembly and chief negotiator with the US, announced the change in policy on Saturday, stating that an initial repatriation flight would take place the following day, Sunday. Rodríguez emphasized that the agreement with the US secured the return of Venezuelan migrants to their nation with guarantees of their Human Rights. The president himself referred to the Venezuelans held in El Salvador as “kidnapped” on Saturday. In recent weeks, some 350 people were deported to Venezuela, including individuals who had spent time at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Trump administration identified these individuals as members of the Tren de Aragua gang.
