Dozens of witnesses in Rome watched in horror as a U.S. tourist from Taiwan, aged 47, became impaled on a metal fence at the Colosseum. The man, reportedly attempting to climb the fence for a better view, suffered a severe back injury from the incident. Bystanders immediately called for help, and it took over 20 minutes for law enforcement and paramedics to free him. He was rushed to the emergency room, where doctors closed the wound with more than 80 stitches, and he was hospitalized in serious condition. The tourist was vacationing in Rome with his family and friends, having been in the city only a few days. The incident happened just a week after Pope Francis’s funeral in Rome, which drew over 250,000 mourners to the capital.
