The White House is backing the Israeli government’s decision to halt aid to Gaza until Hamas agrees to extend the ceasefire, according to a statement released by the National Security Council. National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes stated that Israel has negotiated in good faith since the beginning of the current administration to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. Hughes added that the U.S. will support Israel’s decision regarding the next steps, given that Hamas has shown no interest in continuing the ceasefire negotiations. Earlier on Sunday, Israeli officials announced that they would stop all goods and supplies from entering the Gaza Strip and warned Hamas of additional consequences if they did not accept a proposal for an extended ceasefire. The first phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire expired on Saturday, and the two sides have yet to negotiate the second phase, which would involve the release of the remaining hostages in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal and a permanent ceasefire. An Israeli official stated that the decision to suspend aid was made in coordination with the Trump administration.
