Recently, several Syrian refugees in Austria have been sent letters informing them that their refugee status is being revoked. In line with many of its European counterparts, Austria halted asylum applications in December after the downfall of Bachar al-Assad’s regime and stopped family reunifications to reassess the situation following the dictator’s departure. Taking it a step further, the interior ministry of Vienna has also revealed plans for “a well-structured program of reptriation and deportation to Syria,” which is causing worry among the community.
