An expansive wildfire in the central wilderness of California quickly grew on Thursday, intensified by the scorching and dry weather that amplified the potential for fires ahead of the July Fourth celebrations. The Madre Fire, recently identified as the largest wildfire of the year in the state, has ravaged more than 82 square miles (212 sq km) of San Luis Obispo County since Wednesday. By the evening, efforts to control the blaze had only managed to contain it by 10%.
