The mayor of Rio de Janeiro officially welcomed the Carnival season on Friday by handing over symbolic keys to the city to its Carnival monarch, marking the start of a five-day festive period under the rule of King Momo. Leading up to Carnival, some street parties have already taken over Rio’s streets. During the main celebrations, nearly 500 city-approved parties are scheduled to take place throughout the city.
