Western Europe experienced its most scorching June on record, with the region enduring back-to-back heatwaves that brought extreme temperatures and led to endangering conditions. These dangerous temperatures persisted into July, with studies suggesting that climate change exacerbated the heat by up to 4 degrees Celsius, putting thousands of vulnerable individuals at risk and significantly raising the projected mortality rate. The daily average temperatures were unusually high for early summer, leaving millions of people exposed to this unprecedented heat. Scientists attribute the increasing intensity, duration, and frequency of extreme heat to human-induced climate change, which also fuels devastating forest fires across Europe and around the world. To offer a comprehensive analysis and provide a deeper insight, FRANCE 24’s François Picard is joined by Richard Assheton, a journalist based in Marseille, and Brian Sandberg, a climate scientist historian.
