The United Nations warns that South Sudan is being driven closer to conflict following the arrest of Vice President Riek Machar. Alongside him, the interior minister and his wife, Machar’s spouse, have been detained at their residence by forces loyal to President Salva Kiir. This comes amidst escalating tensions between longtime rivals. The arrests involve individuals who signed a rapidly-deteriorating 2018 peace agreement aimed at ending a five-year civil war.
