Fishermen in France communicate with dolphins to protect them

In a groundbreaking initiative, fishermen in the Bay of Biscay are trialing innovative, state-of-the-art fishing equipment designed to communicate through the “language of dolphins.” The purpose of this novel technology is to alert fishermen to potential threats, thus significantly lowering the incidence of bycatch – a situation where non-target marine species, including dolphins, are inadvertently caught and often die in fishing nets. This troubling issue has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of dolphins in recent years. Our reporters, Aurore Cloé Dupuis and Alexandra Renard from FRANCE 24, explore whether ultrasound beacons can indeed serve as a lifesaver for marine life and bolster the fishing industry.
