Germany: AfD likely to achieve historic gains as CDU faces difficulties in securing majority status

Voting is currently taking place in Germany’s most important election in decades, as described by many. This snap election was initiated following the breakdown of a three-way coalition led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s center-left Social Democratic Party. Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democrats, is likely to become the country’s tenth Chancellor. In addition, the far-right AfD is predicted to place second in the election. Concerns about the economy, security, and immigration are widespread, with only 18% of Germans believing the country is on the right path. France24 Europe Editor Armen Georgian provides a report from Berlin.
