ICC aims to apprehend Taliban officials accused of women’s oppression

On Tuesday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Supreme Leader of Afghanistan, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the country’s Supreme Court president, in connection with the Taliban’s alleged “persecution of Afghan girls and women”. The ICC accuses them of denying girls and women their rights to education, private and family life, movement, expression, thought, conscience, and religion. The Taliban, however, disputes the ICC’s authority and does not acknowledge the court’s legitimacy.
