International assistance pours into Myanmar in response to a destructive quake

In the aftermath of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand, several countries, including China, India, South Korea, and the UK have offered aid. However, the support is still seen as inadequate. Prior to the calamity, already 15 million people in Burma were dealing with famine due to the ongoing civil war. Despite Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government announcing a partial ceasefire on Saturday, the military junta has persisted with its airstrikes on opposition groups. The provision of aid by baumAid is being hindered due to the severe damage to hospitals and roads. The UN has raised concerns about the scarcity of medical supplies, including blood bags and anesthetics, which are obstructing the rescue efforts. Caroline Baum provides us with more details.
