On the 13th of March, interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria endorsed a temporary constitutional proclamation to lay the groundwork for a novel political system. This proclamation notably stipulates that the state shall monopolize military forces, eliciting concerns from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led military entity operating in northeastern Syria. While an accord has been established between the SDF and Damascus for the eventual assimilation of SDF into the national army, it remains perplexing as to how Syria’s preeminent armed group could amalgamate into a single army where certain allies may equally be considered adversaries. The journey towards Syria’s unified military force, therefore, is still veiled in ambiguity.
