Lawmakers in El Salvador ratify amendment paving the way for President Bukele’s perpetual eligibility.

On Thursday, El Salvador’s Congress gave its approval to a constitutional reform that eliminates presidential term limits, effectively permitting the current president, Nayib Bukele, to pursue re-election indefinitely. This revision, swiftly advanced by Bukele’s majority-controlled legislature, extends the term of office from five to six years. The decision received criticism for its implications on democratic principles, with the measure passing by a vote of 57-3.
