In April 1945, when Nazi Germany was nearing defeat, the Swedish Red Cross conducted the most extensive rescue mission of World War II. The clandestine operation, orchestrated between a Swedish aristocrat and Heinrich Himmler, the right-hand man of Adolf Hitler, successfully freed 15,000 prisoners from Nazi camps. One of the destinations for this mission was Ravensbrück, the primary concentration camp for female prisoners.Thousands of women were evacuated from this camp aboard Sweden’s now-legendary “White Buses”, as part of the humanitarian effort.
